Description
Introducing National Bilby Awareness Week
The greater bilby (Macrotis lagotis) will be the beneficiary species of our bi-monthly fundraising campaign through March and April. This year, the Australian Geographic Society will establish a National Bilby Awareness Week, which will be observed annually before the Easter long weekend. This initiative will encourage collaboration across conservation, education and media sectors to raise awareness about bilbies and broader biodiversity challenges.

The campaign aims to shift public perception by celebrating bilbies as a culturally significant Easter icon – advocating for “bilbies, not bunnies” – and educate Australians about the ecological role of this keystone species. The campaign will also focus on the threats posed by invasive species such as foxes and rabbits, which endanger the bilby and wreak havoc on native biodiversity and agriculture.
National Bilby Awareness Week aligns with the goals of the Greater Bilby Recovery Plan, which seeks to grow bilby populations, expand and protect their habitats, maintain genetic diversity, and enhance First Nations involvement in bilby conservation. Protecting bilbies has a ripple effect that will benefit entire ecosystems.
Ultimately, National Bilby Awareness Week can become a powerful media, conservation sector and community-driven campaign to elevate the bilby as a symbol of hope and action for all native fauna and flora.
Please help us kickstart National Bilby Awareness Week by donating to the March–April Save the Bilby Now campaign. All donations over $2 are tax deductible.
