The Australian Geographic Society is a not-for-profit that supports Australian individuals and organisations leading the way in nature conservation, scientific research, public education aimed at positive environmental outcomes, and the advancement of human knowledge through exploration.
It’s our vision to foster a community of well-informed, passionate Australians who are committed to finding solutions to the multiple threats facing our natural world.
Our History
The Australian Geographic Society was established by Dick Smith AC in 1987, a year after he launched Australian Geographic. Dick wanted to give back to the kinds of people and organisations that inspired him and who would also inspire the readers of Australian Geographic.
He pledged $100,000 per year to be donated from the business to the Society which in turn would be used to fund worthy causes.
In the decades since, Australian Geographic has donated millions of dollars to help protect our natural heritage and encourage an all-important spirit of adventure and discovery.
Today, 100 per cent of Australian Geographic’s profits are donated to the Society.
What do we do?
We harness Australian Geographic’s expert storytelling to power the Society’s financial and practical support of Australians fighting to preserve and restore our natural heritage.
We achieve our mission through a program of grants and awards for nature and adventure, and through public fundraising campaigns known as Australia’s Most Endangered
We provide individuals and organisations with valuable media coverage of their causes, efforts and achievements in the pages of Australian Geographic and through our many additional and emerging communication channels.
As a highly trusted and respected independent Australian media brand, this high-profile coverage is invaluable and can lead to further opportunities for the people we support in this way.
