Australia’s Most Endangered July-August 2026
Protect Australia’s largest owl
Hidden among the trees of our suburbs and bushland reserves lives one of Australia’s most remarkable predators. The powerful owl is an apex hunter, a guardian of healthy ecosystems and a species increasingly under pressure from habitat loss, urban development, vehicle strikes, rodenticide poisoning and the disappearance of the ancient trees it needs to breed.
Discover the secret life of the powerful owl
Your donation will directly support the practical conservation work being undertaken by photographer and conservationist Andrew Gregory, who has spent years tracking, monitoring and protecting powerful owls across Sydney's bushland corridors.
Funds raised will help Andrew and his collaborators:
- Locate and monitor breeding pairs using remote cameras and acoustic monitoring equipment
- Identify and map critical nesting and roosting habitat before it is lost to development
- Trial artificial nest boxes in areas where centuries-old hollow-bearing trees have disappeared
- Rescue and rehabilitate injured owls in partnership with wildlife carers
- Collect vital data that informs councils, land managers and conservation planners
- Engage local communities in protecting habitat and reducing threats such as rodenticide poisoning and bird strikes.
Every nesting hollow identified, every breeding pair monitored and every young owl successfully fledged helps secure the future of this vulnerable species while data and learnings from Andrew’s work can be applied across powerful owl habitat throughout eastern Australia.
The fate of the powerful owl will not be decided in a distant wilderness. It will be decided in the places where most Australians live.
By donating today, you can help ensure these magnificent birds continue to haunt our night skies for generations to come, before it becomes another species in crisis. Your contribution will support habitat restoration, conservation science and on-ground action to safeguard one of Australia’s most unique and irreplaceable animals. All donations over $2 are tax deductible.
