Australia’s Most Endangered January-February 2026
The iconic platypus
The platypus is one of Australia’s most extraordinary animals; ancient, elusive and unique. As a monotreme, it lays eggs, hunts with electroreception and glides quietly and mostly unseen through our rivers. It’s also the emblem of Australian Geographic, a fitting symbol as we mark 40 years of telling Australian stories.
Yet across much of its range, the platypus is under pressure. River regulation, habitat loss, drought and climate change are fragmenting populations and making survival harder each year. That’s why the Australian Geographic Society has partnered with Bush Heritage Australia to raise funds for on-ground conservation protecting the healthy rivers and catchments platypus depend on. Bush Heritage works with scientists, landholders and communities to restore waterways, safeguard refuges and ensure platypus populations can persist into the future.
You can help protect this remarkable species. Donate today and be part of securing a future for a creature which has come to represent Australia itself. All donations over $2 are tax deductible.
