Meet Mars, the fourth planet from the Sun and Earth's nearest planetary neighbour. Named after the Roman God of War for its striking rusty red colour, caused by iron-rich minerals in its rocks, Mars is one of the most recognisable planets in the solar system. When viewed from space, the only areas not red are the white polar ice caps, frozen year-round at each pole.
A Martian day is only a few minutes longer than ours, but while Earth has one moon, Mars has two — Deimos and Phobos. Both are small and orbit remarkably close to the planet's surface, with Deimos completing its orbit in just eight hours.
