The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia's RN standards for practice (2016) has replaced the National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse (2006). About the Authors

Sue Carter DeLaune

Sue C. DeLaune is currently the Education Director of S DeLaune Consulting, an independent continuing education business in Mandeville, Louisiana. She is also Assistance Professor of Nursing at William Carey University, New Orleans, Louisiana, where she provides didactic and clinical instruction to students in fundamentals of nursing. DeLaune has over 35 years of experience as a clinician, administrator and educator.

Patricia K. Ladner

Patricia K. Ladner is a former Consultant for Nursing Practice in the Louisiana State Board of Nursing and has taught nursing in diploma and associate degree schools of nursing prior to her retirement. Ms. Ladner has been recognized as one of the Great 100 Nurses by the New Orleans District Nurses Association and is a 2009 Caring Woman Honoree by the Biloxi Regional Medical Center and Cable One.

Lauren McTier

Lauren McTier is a lecturer in undergraduate studies for the Bachelor of Nursing courses in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Deakin University. Lauren’s research program is within the area of quality and safety of healthcare. Her PhD research focused on the role patients may play in improving the quality and safety of healthcare. Within the School of Nursing and Midwifery Lauren is the Director of Clinical Studies and oversees the Clinical Simulation Centre. She continues to work in clinical practice where she has over 15 years’ experience in critical care nursing.

Joanne Tollefson

Joanne Tollefson was a Senior Lecturer and Deputy Head of the School of Nursing Sciences at James Cook University. She is a registered nurse with many years of clinical experience in several countries and extensive experience in nursing education at both the hospital and tertiary levels. Research interests include competency-based education and clinical assessment, development of reflective practitioners for a changing work environment, chronic pain and arbovirus disease in the tropics. Joanne is also a two-time recipient of the National Awards for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning (Carrick Award, 2007 and Australian Teaching and Learning Council Award, 2008).

Joanne Lawrence

Joanne Lawrence is an academic at the Australian Catholic University (ACU) and also works in private practice as a neurological continence and wound clinical nurse consultant. Joanne has worked as a Registered Nurse since 1981, with most of her clinical experience focusing on people who have either an acquired or congenital neurological conditions. She has an extensive educational track record working in large private healthcare organisations as well as tertiary settings, teaching undergraduate and post graduate students of nursing. Research interests include: transition of research into clinical practice, healthcare provision to vulnerable groups of people and neurological bowel and bladder dysfunction. In 2012 Joanne was recognised by the Australian Rehabilitation Nurses Association with an award in Excellence in Clinical Nursing Research. Joanne has submitted her PhD within the Faculty of Medicine, at Sydney University. Her thesis explored bowel and bladder dysfunctions experienced by people with Parkinson's disease.
