Good to know
A sphygmomanometer is a device that measures blood pressure, particularly the arteries. It consists of a gauge that is attached to a rubber cuff, which is wrapped around the arm. A stethoscope is used to listen to the arterial blood flow sounds.
As the cuff is inflated with air, a stethoscope is placed over the arm. While releasing the air, the first sound heard marks the systolic pressure. While the release of air from the cuff continues, the sound diminishes and then stops. The point when the sound is no longer heard marks the diastolic pressure. Systolic and diastolic pressures are commonly stated as systolic 'over' diastolic. For example, 120 over 80.
