Australian Journalism Today is a collection of works by a number of experts in the field of journalism in Australia. The need for news media and journalism to make civic society central to their work and for journalists to engage in reflective practice underpin the approach taken by the editor and contributors to this book. The focus of the chapters in this book is on the following questions:
1. What are the main issues facing practitioners of journalism? 2. How is the practice of journalism in Australia changing? 3. How is it changing in mainstream news media organisations? 4. How is it being done outside these organisations, by individuals and by new organisations, whether commercially driven, not-for-profit, or community-based? 5. What can journalists working in mainstream news media organisations learn from new practitioners, and vice versa? For instance, working journalists may learn to re-connect with their audiences, and citizen journalists may learn about the complexities of ethical issues about which working journalists have a reservoir of experience and knowledge.
