GLOSSARY OF TERMS - BINOCULARS AND SPOTTING SCOPES

Magnification

  • Number of times the object being viewed is enlarged e.g. 8x 25 - objects are 8 times bigger than seen with the naked eye.
Objective Lens
  • Diameter of front lens e.g. 8x 25 - 25mm lens. Also called aperture, the larger the size of the objective lens, the more is light gathered and the brighter the image will appear.
Prism Type
  • Roof: The prisms overlap and are aligned in a straight line with the lenses, allowing for a slim construction.
  • Porro: The objective is offset from the eyepiece, gives a greater depth of perception and a wider field of view.
  • Reverse Porro: The objective is offset from the eyepiece in a horizontal way reducing the total size of the construction by about 30 percent compared to the traditional Porro prism system.
Optical Coating
  • Various coating processes on the lenses and prisms determine the brightness and light gathering ability, providing higher contrast and brighter, sharper images.
  • Coated: A single layer on at least one lens surface.
  • Fully Coated: Single layer on all air-to-glass lens surfaces.
  • Multi-Coated: Multiple layers on at least one lens surface.
  • Fully Multi-Coated: Multiple layer on all air-to-glass lens surface.
Field of View
  • This is the side-to-side linear measurement of what you can see through the binoculars, at a distance of 1000 metres. The higher the magnification the narrower the field of view.
Close Focus
  • The closest distance to the object that the binoculars can be used while retaining a sharp focus.
Prism Glass
  • The common types of optical prisms are barium-crown (BAK-4) glass or borosilicate (BK-7) glass. The BAK-4 is a higher quality glass that reduces light scattering, resulting in sharper and brighter images.
Waterproof and Fogproof
  • Spotting scopes can be O-ring sealed for complete waterproof protection, and nitrogen-purged to prevent fogging inside the optical surfaces. These models are able to keep completely dry inside after immersion in water and are suitable for all weather conditions.
Eye relief
  • This is the optimal distance a spotting scope should be held away from the human eye to observe the entire field of view. Long Eye Relief (LER) reduces eyestrain and provides an extra margin of comfort and safety.
