BINOCULARS, what do all the features mean?
Magnification

  • Number of times the object being viewed is enlarged e.g. 8x 25 = objects are 8 times bigger than seen with the naked eye
Objective Lens (mm)
  • Diameter of front lens e.g. 8x 25 = 25mm lens
  • The larger the number = maximizes light which leads to sharper image
Prism Type
  • Roof Long, straight tube. The prisms overlap and are in a straight line.
  • Porro The objective is offset from the eyepiece, gives a greater depth of perception.
  • Reverse Porro The objective is offset from he eyepiece, leads to 30% reduction in size of binocular.
Optical Coating
  • Various coating processes on the lenses and prisms determine the brightness and light gathering, providing higher contrast and brighter, sharper images.
  • Fully Coated Single layer on all outer lens surface
  • Multi-Coated Multiple layers on either lens surface
  • Fully Multi-Coated Multiple layer on all outer lenses
Field of View
  • This is the side-to-side linear measurement of the circular field seen through the binoculars. The higher the magnification the narrower the field of view.

  • Plane spotting - high magnification = narrow field of view to read plane numbers!
Close Focus
  • The closest distance to the object that the binoculars can be used while retaining a sharp focus

AG Staff Review

Reviewed by Alex Top Ryde AG on 31/08/11

The first time I saw these I thought "what a funny shape"- but the fact that these babies are contoured to fit snugly in your hand is a big plus. It makes them very comfy to hold for long periods of time while searching for that elusive lorikeet or potaroo in the rainforest. This pair gives an incredibly sharp image due to the large lens diameter, but is compact enough to stow in hand luggage on your big trip. It comes with its own carry case and strap so no worries about losing them makes them a great gift from the very young to your great great grandad! Alex from AG Top Ryde

AG Staff Pick - Barska Naturescape Binoculars

Reviewed by Josh from AG Woden on 29/07/11

I was heading to Borneo on holiday and in need of a good pair of lightweight and robust binoculars to throw in my backpack. I had a look at the range of AG binocs and this pair ticked all the boxes. I was the envy of my fellow travellers when I spotted Orangutans, Proboscis Monkies, Hornbills and even a snake up a tree, way before they did! I placed the binoculars infront of my camera and got some awesome photos of the jungle wildlife, looked like I was at arm's length, when really I was miles away! It means I also have a pair of binoculars to take to sporting events and even concerts at Hunter Valley! I love them, you will too! Claire from AG Support Office
