The 60x700AZ telescope is a great starter telescope for children - Australian Geographic would recommend it for all children who are interested in space. You can see the moon, as well as some details on Saturn and Jupiter. The telescope comes with 3 eyepieces and is easy to transport to get the ultimate view.

Did You Know
The moon is Earth's only known natural satellite, and is the fifth largest satellite in the solar system. It is a quarter the diameter of Earth but only 1/81 of it's mass.

  • Apeture: 60mm
  • Focal Length:700mm
  • Scope Type: Refractor
  • Eyepiece 1: 20mm (35x magnification)
  • Eyepiece 2: 12.5mm (56x magnification)
  • Eyepiece 3: 4mm (175x magnification)
  • Mount: Alt-Azimuth
  • TELESCOPES, What do all the features mean?
  • Refractor: Bends the light to your eye using lenses.
  • Reflector: Reflects the light to your eye using mirrors.
  • Catadioptric: Use a combination of mirrors and lenses to get the light to your eye e.g. Maksutov-Cassegrain and Schmidt-Cassegrain.
  • Alt-azimuth mount: A simple mount that allows movement in altitude (up and down) and in azimuth (side to side).
  • Equitorial: A mount with an axis parallel to the axis of the earth. This allows easy tracking of objects in the sky.
  • Focal Length: The higher the focal length, the higher the magnification.
  • Eyepiece: A small tube that contains the lenses needed to focus the image from the telescope to the eye. The size of the eyepiece affects the magnification. High number = lower magnification. Low number = higher magnification.
  • Magnification: A calculation of the focal length of the telescope รท the eyepiece. E.g. Focal length of 130EQ is 650mm with a 10mm eyepiece the magnification is 65x.
  • Aperture: The size of the main lens or mirror that collects light in your telescope. Usually the first number in the description of the telescope.
  • Barlow Lense: When placed in front of the normal eyepiece, it increases the magnification of the normal eyepiece.
  • Diagonal Eyepiece: A mirror or prism system that changes that changes the angle and orientation of the light rays coming from the telescope to the eyepiece.
  • Erecting Eyepiece: Flips the image coming from the telescope to right side up (default image is upside down when looking though a telescope).
  • Finderscope: A low power (or zero power) scope attached parallel to the main telescope, which provides easy telescope aiming and object locating.

The 60x700 AZ Starter Scope. A well accepted telescope particularly for the younger generation, simple to set up and simple to use. There are several good add ons, such as books on astronomy especially Astronomy 2012. The price is affordable and the quality is good. George AG Warringah Mall, NSW
